It has been a great 3 weeks in Art Buffet! During our final week, students finished painting their version of Claude Monet's San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk. They also glazed their log cabins, to which they add a roof and created an environment to display them in. Lastly, we made two oil pastel drawings, one based on another Monet painting and the other an exploration of abstract art. Art BuffetOr does it go this way......? Sculpture SpectacularAs we wrapped up our Sculpture Spectacular class, we finally got to paint the masks we made with paper mache on the first day. They took forever to dry but our patience was rewarded as I think they look pretty awesome. Students finished this mask. based on a personal hero of theirs, with acrylic paint, permanent marker, and a variety of materials for "hair." We also created a miniature food sculpture using Model Magic and wove a placemat with construction paper for it to lay upon. Lastly, students created a sculpture out of recycled materials.
Hi there! Please read below to find out about our activities this 2nd week of Summer U. As a reminder, please send your child in appropriate clothing for art making or have them bring a smock. Also, we are still short a few bags with handles (plastic or paper is fine) so if you have any please send them in. Lastly, if your child will not be attendance the last few days of our class please let me know so I can return their artwork to them. Thank you! Art BuffetStudents in Art Buffet worked on a variety of different activities this week, just as the class name suggests! We began the week by completing our woven pouch. Next, we got our hands messy with some clay and created a miniature log cabin. This look a lot of work as students built up layer upon layer of coils for "wooden logs." Wait to you see them! We also worked on an acrylic painting on canvas inspired by Impressionist artist Claude Monet. For many, this was their first time using acrylic paint. Sculpture SpectacularAs our sculptures are making their way out of South's kiln, we're now able to paint or glaze them on this second week of Summer U. The coil pots we made last week were painted with white and blue acrylic paint. Next, our fishbowl reliefs were glazed a variety of colors that, once fired a second time, will turn into a variety of dazzling colors. Student also learned a bit about endangered species and made a sculpture of one of those creatures using Model Magic. To accompany their sculptures, students made a 3D environment with paper and markers!
Every Friday you'll find a summary of the week's activities. At the end of Summer U, you'll find tons of pictures of everything we made! As a reminder, please send your child with any extra plastic or paper bags you may have. I'm also looking for unwanted newspaper to help wrap sculptures in. Thank you! Art Buffet We hit the ground running in Art Buffet this week! On our first day, students created a portfolio to keep their artwork safe. Next, we began a scratch art project, as students etched either a dinosaur or a bird onto their board. To make our creatures look more realistic, we discussed adding visual texture. Our current project is a weaving project. Students are making small pouches with a needle and thread. They also learned a little about the history of weaving. As you can imagine, this project is great for building fine motor skills in our young artists. Sculpture Spectacular Students in Sculpture Spectacular also made portfolios on their first day. Then, because I was so excited to get started, we began our first big project of the summer: paper mache masks! Students used an instant paper mache mix and a face mould to create a mask that will depict someone they consider a hero. Students should've brought home a sheet on Tuesday explaining they had a homework assignment to bring in a photo of this person, real or imaginary, due Monday, June 19th. If students don't have printers at home they were instructed to inform me so I can print an image for them.
While our masks are drying, we started our next project, which was to make a pot inspired by blue and white pottery. On Thursday and Friday, we being yet another sculpture, this one a relief of a fish tank. Dear Parents,
Welcome! My name is Mr. Fred DeMarco and I’ll be teaching your child’s class this summer. This website is the home for all information pertaining to my classes. I’m so excited to make some art! For those who don’t know me, I’m the art teacher at Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary. Next year is my 12th year in that position and this is my 11th year teaching summer school. Being an art class, many of our projects are messy so please send students in appropriate attire (especially if your child is enrolled in Sculpture Spectacular). As a reminder, students are not allowed to bring food of any kind to summer school, however, water is fine. Every Friday you can find a recap of the week's activities right here on this blog! Please don’t hesitate to e-mail me if there’s any important information that you’d like me to have to make the next 3 weeks more successful, or if you have any questions . You can contact me at [email protected]. Lastly, if you have any newspaper or paper/plastic grocery bags at home I’d love to have them to help wrap and store student projects that are coming home. Please just send them with your child. Thanks! Mr. Fred DeMarco |
