Olive Art

Welcome to the Art Room Website!

My name is Fred DeMarco. This is my 16th year teaching art at Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary.  Joining me this year are Mrs. Alyssa Maloney from Patton Elementary and Ms. Dawn Drury. Did you know a few decades ago Arlington Heights School District 25 didn't have an art program? Art was taught by classroom teachers in their rooms. Today, after a referendum and much effort, the arts thrive in 25. Each building has a dedicated art room and art is taught by an art specialist, individuals trained not only in art theory and practice but education and child development as well.

My Philosophy of Art Education

Picture
I believe art education should be a right and not a privilege. It should allow students to reflect on their lives and the world they inhabit and teach them how to visually represent what they see and feel in creative, student-driven ways. Art education should provide opportunities for students to explore, create, connect, collaborate, analyze, interpret, and play. In other words, art education is about so much more than creating a pretty picture. Ask your child what they did in art today. By initiating that conversation, you're helping to reinforce their knowledge and skills and hopefully fostering a lifelong love and appreciation for art!
