Thanks so much for attending Art Buffet in Summer U, I hope your child had fun! During our final week of class, we glazed our blue and white pots. Students began with a layer of white glaze and once dry, painted a motif in blue glaze. We also worked on a drawing inspired by Stefan Bucher. First, students used an eye dropper to drop ink blobs on paper. Next, they blew on the blobs to allow the ink to run in interesting ways. Once dry, they used the ink parts to form the basis of a creature, filling in the rest with permanent marker and soft pastels. Lastly, we created a character using oil based clay. Below are pictures from our 3 weeks together from both morning classes. Have a great summer!
Our second week of Summer U began with an exploration of the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. Students learned a little bit about this artist and created their own version of what is perhaps his most famous work, The Starry Night. Our young artists used acrylic paint on canvas, which was a first time experience for many of them. Learning how to use these materials was fun and challenging. Our next project for the week was to create a miniature food sculpture. Students first sketched out their designs and brainstormed what would make up the perfect meal. Next, we made a plate for our meals using model magic. The fun really began after this step, as students sculpted the foods to sit upon the plate, again using model magic. As a finishing step, we prepared our food sculptures for presentation by weaving a placemat for them with construction paper. We can't wait for you to see our work!
Hi parents, it's been a great first week here in Art Buffet. I've enjoyed meeting your child and continuing to develop their love of art. On the last day of summer school you'll find lots of pictures of our work here on my blog, but for now here's a recap of our week. Our activities have been varied. We started out by getting to know one another and making a portfolio to store our artwork in. Next, we explored quilting by reading Faith Ringgold's classic book Tar Beach. After discussing the book, students created symmetrical paper quilts with markers and construction paper. Our next project built upon the idea of symmetry (radial symmetry to be exact) as students used geometric stamps to create fabulous designs on paper. Our most recent project, started today, was to make a pot out of earthenware clay. These pots were inspired by blue and white pottery and will be glazed once they're fired in our kiln. Students will take home all their projects on the last week of summer school. I'm so excited for you to see what they've made! Have a great weekend.
Dear Parents,
Welcome! My name is Mr. Fred DeMarco and I’ll be teaching your child’s class this summer. This website is the home for all information pertaining to my classes. For those who don’t know me, I’m the art teacher at Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary. Next year is my 13th year in that position and this is my 12th year teaching summer school. I'm thrilled to see some students returning for the fun from last year, so most of this information will be review to some folks. Being an art class, many of our projects are messy so please send students in appropriate attire. You may also have your child bring a smock to class that can stay here until summer school is over. As a reminder, students are not allowed to bring food of any kind to summer school, however, water is fine. Every Friday you can find a recap of the week's activities right here on this blog! Class will start at 9:00 am every morning so please do your best to be on time so we can cram in the most art awesomeness possible! Please don’t hesitate to e-mail me if there’s any important information that you’d like me to have to make the next 3 weeks more successful, or if you have any questions . You can contact me at [email protected]. Lastly, if you have any paper/plastic grocery bags at home I’d love to have them to help store student projects when they come home. Please just send them with your child. Thanks! Mr. Fred DeMarco |
